  2. Who should be responsible for Gammy's upbringing? The surrogate mother or the biological mother.

  3. should we donate to beggars?

We shouldn't donate to beggars, because it only harms them more than benefit them.

  4. Topic:
    Time-Travelling
    Focus:
    Alternate Timelines (Infinite Universe Theory)
    Question:
If we achieve travelling through timelines, should we?
    Argument:
We can communicate through timelines, but should not travel through.
    Reasons:
As people tend to be self-interested, many might take advantage of this technology.
It will affect the timeline we travel to.
We might adversely affect the whole space-time continuum.

  5. Should magazines digitally enhance/retouch their images?

I think not, because it distorts society's view of beauty and plays on people's insecurities.

    Stand: We should

    I disagree

  8. The New World Order : Paranoia or Reality?
I believe in the existence of the New World Order as there have been far too many "coincidences" in modern society which are linked to this order.

  9. Topic: Should stem cell treatment be put into clinical use?

My stance: It should be a medical treatment that is available to everyone.
Reason: There are a lot advantages in this suggested by stem cell research.

  10. I actually read something online earlier about the Hadron Collider... Two scientists were speculating that a "time travelling bird" sabotaged it. Don't know if it's true or not...

  11. Diet fads (Veganism, paleo, vegetarian, pescatarian, fruit, air diet)
often involve investing into pricey "super foods.

Are these publicity stunts or do these actually make one healthier/live longer or
    worth the monetary sacrifice?

  12. Lone Survivor. Is it pro war?
Critics brand this movie as pro-war and should be banned, but I doubt so...

  15. Does cosmetic surgery enhance beauty or does it destroy it? I think it enhances beauty. Many other things such as make-up and even clothes enhance beauty, yet no one claims that they destroy it. Cosmetic surgery is merely a permanent alternative to make-up.

  16. Should euthanasia be an option or a total ban?

Euthanasia should always be a legal option.

If we assume everyone is born equal without superiority over another, we thus do not have the authority to prevent someone from doing what they want, even voluntary death.

  18. Is freedom doing whatever you want, or is it doing what is morally right?

If freedom is doing whatever one pleases, and an individual wishes to take drugs and gets addicted, does that individual still have freedom?
However it can also be argued that if freedom is only doing what is morally right, is that individual truly free to choose as he pleases?

I think freedom is doing what is morally right, only then does an individual remain free.

  19. However, the surrogate mother refuses to give up Gammy even after the parents wanted him back. This shows that the surrogate mother would take care of Gammy better than his biological mother as she cares for him.

    ReplyDelete
  20. However, is there an international standard for "morally right"? Problems would arise if one person's moral standards differ from the rest.

    (Super interesting topic omgz)

  21. However, if people are allowed to time travel, there is a possibility that we might be able to bring extinct creatures or plants back from the past. This may enhance research and development, which may result in the discovery of new medicines or treatments.

  22. Is animal testing justifiable?

Not justifiable. Reasearch shown that animal research many not produce similar results as when a particular drug is given to human. Hence, killing animals just for results that is in accurate in not justifiable.

  23. I strongly recommend this insightful movie - New World/신세계 :)

  24. We should not, because the public faces the same criminals as the police do but less frequently. Before the police arrives, which will take a period of time, the public will be able to save themselves from the criminals.

  25. I feel that social networking sites ultimately discourage social interaction as they keep social interaction behind screens instead of face to face.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think magazines SHOULD retouch their images. If the images produced are going to be of low quality, no one will even purchase the magazines. The public does not pay money for images of unpleasant-looking people or things. Even if magazines do not retouch their images, people who are insecure will still be insecure. Their insecurities will not vanish or diminish just because magazines do not retouch their images. It is unfair to push all the blame to magazines. People may still feel insecure from watching television and videos of celebrities. Does this mean they should stop watching them?

  27. Majority of cartoons are catered for young children hence the content and mannerisms of cartoon characters will most probably be childish. Young adults may be influenced to copy these mentalities and mannerisms after watching cartoons, hence stunting their growth of maturity. Furthermore, cartoons are easily addictive and may distract young adults from other more important priorities. Young children may have the luxury of time to watch cartoons but definitely not young adults. Therefore, young adults are too old to watch cartoons and should not watch them.

  28. Nevertheless, donating to certain beggars will enable them to live another day. Some beggars are truly in need, and are victims of unfortunate circumstances. As such, while we may not necessarily donate money, we can donate other items such as food, water, blankets and other daily necessities So as to ensure that money we donate will not be wasted away on cigarettes, alcohol and drugs. This way, we are also able to determine which beggars are con-artists and which are truly in need. Furthermore, as humans, we can pass kindness forward. A simple act of kindness can lighten up someone's day. This will also incur good karma (if you believe in it) and even if you don't, it makes yourself feel good and this furthers your personal self-interest. Therefore, we should donate to beggars.

  30. Without animal testing, many of the medical breakthroughs up to present time wouldn't have been possible. It also has the backing of the scientific community.

  31. Should they be concerned more about the current affairs? There are other areas of entertainment that are more suited to adults that can allow them to distress better

  32. Certain diet fads work as long as the individual undertaking the diet has the ability to persevere and prolong the diet to become not just a diet, but a regular eating regime.

  33. While it (Stem cell treatment) is very advantageous, there are a number of disadvantages that hampers researchers from fully implementing.
In adults; stem cells may harbour genetic defects, as the target disease may be presenting the genes of these cells and it is a very hard process. In embryonic stem cell research; it is very difficult to control and may take many attempts before researchers will be able to derive the desired cell linings from them. In addition to that, it involves destroying 5-7 day old embryos, which raises a lot of moral and ethical issues.
Therefore, giving theses risks, stem cell treatment is a long way from being fully implemented.

  34. Should single-sex schools be abolished?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Sorry I might not have been clear on my stance. I am okay with retouching such as adjusting the color, brightness, contrast etc. in order to make images more appealing. I understand that magazines do need to make money. However, I am against altering the bodies of people in the images such that it looks significantly different from the original photo. This is because people usually obtain their ideas of beauty from these glamorous magazines, TV shows, advertisements etc. If they continually see these pictures of fake, edited and too-good-to-be-true images, they risk developing a totally unattainable standard of beauty. This can affect their self-esteem and self confidence.

  36. I agree. If a critically ill person who is in a lot of pain wants to end their suffering, it would be selfish to not allow them to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Does cosmetic surgery enhance beauty or destroy it? I think it enhances beauty. Just like how make-up promotes beauty, cosmetic surgery does the same job, except that it is more permanent.

    ReplyDelete
  38. No because the students at a single-sex schools are able to achieve higher academic grades without being distracted by girlfriends-boyfriends problem. Single-sex schools provide a better learning environment and can be considered more effective. (I think)

  39. It is a terrible act that one does when he does not have any moral or religious conscience. It is equivalent to having the licence to kill. Giving ourselves that permit would erode the respect of our own lives. Legalised euthanasia will allow carers a legal license to terminate life and this can be classified as "murderers"

  43. Of course in some cases social networking brings people closer together, for example long lost friends or parents who want to keep in touch with their children's lives who are living abroad.

  44. There was this granny ( about 80 years old) who sold trivial stuffs such as sewing needles and scissors on the pavement near my house. She only earned (perhaps) two dollars each day and nevertheless persisted in her effort to make a living. As a handsome, altruistic guy, whenever I needed some tools, I always purchased from her.

However, when I was buying a pair of scissors from her the other day, a sloppily dressed, able-bodied street beggar approached me with his hat. Again, as a handsome and altruistic guy, I placed my one dollar change in his hat.

And then, I noticed the disappointed and melancholic look on that granny's face - a look I would never forget.

    ---
The granny was doing her best to make both ends meet; she lived with dignity. Thereby, it hurt when she saw someone getting money so easily without even trying, right in front of her.

This story is completely fictional and I am not handsome at all. But this is the aptest way to express my view on this topic.

  48. On the contrary, not having the choice would be against our own self-respect if we can't make our own decisions. Furthermore, the decision will be made by the individual and does not allow caregivers to make the call.

  49. I agree that cosmetic surgery does enhance beauty if it is done tastefully, but if it is done in excess it can destroy beauty. For example, this article: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2320679/Korean-woman-Hang-Mioku-injects-COOKING-OIL-face-refused-plastic-surgery.html

  53. As George Bush said "There is nothing more fulfilling than to serve your country and your fellow citizens and to do it well. And that's what our system of self-government depends on." I think after years of history with communism/democratic rule by leaders of their own country, it is a dramatic change to a totalitarian world government and this actually protects the weak from the strong because there is a strong presence of justice right? However, I think the "survival of the fittest" and weeding out the less adapted communities from the others should be a goal that the world should continue to work towards. Hence, paranoia for sure.

  55. The problem with the acceptance and approval of any New World Order is that no government has ever offered, nor will it ever offer, real hope and peace for mankind. When man turns to government to provide worldwide peace and hope, he becomes disillusioned and enslaved by its false promises. History has proven time and again that no quasi-world empire has ever survived, simply because of its innate flaws of greed, corruption, and quest for power.

  60. Beauty cannot be anyhow defined by a set of rules. Yes, there is the "ideal" proportions that seem pleasing to ones eye. But ultimately beauty is what you define it to be. Cosmetic surgery only enhances beauty if oneself believes it does so. It's extremely personal.

  61. No one is ever too old to watch cartoons. In fact, there are certain cartoons that are catered towards more mature audiences. For example, Tokyo Ghoul is a Japanese Cartoon, known as anime, which is catered towards older audiences. It has a massive amount of gore, with innards being ripped out of people, toes and fingers cut and forced to be eaten, holes plummeted through people's stomachs and generally a lot of killing. To a certain extent, cartoons such as these are more similar to HBO's Game of Thrones, which is well-known for its graphic violence and sex, than more cheerful cartoons such as SpongeBob Squarepants. Furthermore, there are many cartoons and anime with very deep meanings that younger audiences would not be able to grasp. As in Tokyo Ghoul, issues such as the right to live, the problems of living between worlds and the idea that in life, the line between the good and bad is blurred and nobody is right or wrong. Such heavy topics would be detrimental to a young child, but to an adult, it is highly relatable to many real life circumstances. This includes racism, the divide between the rich and poor, people whom are between worlds (Asians raised in Western Societies...etc.) and that the government may not always be absolute.
